English Weather, News, Ski Report - February 16, 2024

07012024-p1911128

WEATHER

Although it is overcast, the clouds are thin and high in the sky so the visability should be OK for most of the day, though there may be times when it is more challenging.

There isn’t much wind, however it will be a warm day,

At 09.30 the temperature is

  • +1° in the Village.
  • +2° on Bellevarde.
  • +3° on Solaise.
  • -1° on Pisaillas.

Maximum temperature is expected to be  +7 ° at 2000 meters.

ROADS

No problems are expected on the roads in our village but it will be a busy weekend both heading up and down the mountain.

SKI REPORT

Once again, all our lifts and pistes are open
except for the Tunnel piste in Le Fornet
and most of the pistes were groomed overnight,
including the Epaule du Charvet, a bit of a treat.

Those not groomed are

AT LE FORNET

  • Foret
  • Petit Bois
  • Signal
  • Table d'Orientation

ON SOLAISE

  • 3000
  • Cugnai
  • Marmottons
  • S

There will be training this morning on
the upper parts of the OK and Orange.

There will be racing for most of the day on the

  • Raye
  • G

Remember that especially on this warm day,
the Santons and the L
are very likely to close later due to the high risk of an avalanche engulfing these slopes.

Please don’t ski down a closed run.
The pisteurs love to see us enjoying the slopes they care for and don't take any pleasure  from closing a piste.

Tignes can be accessed via the Tommeuses or Borsat chairlifts.

The avalanche risk today is again 2 out of 5.

Remember that the off piste area is constantly being modified by sun, wind, snow and people.

Ski only with those who know where they are going and  could help you in an emergency.
What about booking to ski with a mountain guide ?

All of our walking paths and cross county tracks are open apart from les Branges.

LOCAL NEWS

It is Friday so time for Weekend Traffic Forecasts.

A busy weekend.........76,000 vehicles approaching and a similar number homeward bound.
No surprise during peak school holidays for so many different countries.

The ‘fun’ starts for those leaving between 17.00 and 20.00 this evening,

Tomorrow, either leave at dawn or
have an easy morning, enjoy an extra ski, swim or early and long lunch so that you avoid travelling before 13.00 as it will be busy from 07.00.

For those arriving, tomorrow will be slow for 11 hours, between 08.00 and 19.00.
Bit of good news for those not travelling until Sunday, your drive should be carefree.

There was a serious accident yesterday after a 20 year old American speed rider lost control and ended up on the Santons.
After first aid by the pisteurs he was helicoptered to Hospital in Grenoble.
He has both facial and head injuries.
A grim end to his holiday.
We wish him a rapid recovery.

For those unclear, speed riders go out on skis but with a handy parachute or similar in their rucksack.
So you can ski, float through the air and then land on your skis.
For those tempted to try it, you are not allowed to fly above an open piste, however high in the sky you are floating.
The Manchet valley is very popular particularly as there are great routes from both Solaise and Bellevarde.

Worth considering that tracks you may be tempted to follow, before you end up trembling on the edge of a cliff without a parachute......
MAY have been from a Speed Rider......
Never follow tracks off piste !

The helicopter was needed again yesterday afternoon after a young girl had a bad fall off piste near the Face de Bellevarde.

Yesterday evening saw this winters longest, illuminated descent.
More than 220 tiny skiers, mini hands clutching micro lamps mimicked Tuesday's torchlight descent.

Even better 2000 euros was raised for 3 important charities.

The ESF (French Ski School) have long been sensitive to the challenges facing our disabled community
so opened the downhill with a disabled child, seated safely in a handiski
so they could also share the thrill and joy of sliding down our mountain.

Team GB continue to excel at the World Aquatics in Doha.
They are currently 4th in the medal table, with 3 golds and 4 silvers and 8 bronzes.
Well done to both the athletes and the whole team supporting them !
