Weather

We have a chilly and snowy morning inbound today, will sunny spells and intermittent snowfall throughout the morning but clearing into the afternoon, then returning again this evening. The wind is due to gust up tp 50 kilometers per hour in town, however will only be blowing moderately up to 30 km per hour from the southeast at higher altitudes.

At 0900 temperatures were sitting at zero degrees in the village, minus 7 and a half at the top of bellevarde and -11 on pisaillas. We are looking towards a maximum temperature of 2 degrees today around 1 o clock.

If you're headinng up the mountain today most things are open but bear in mind there may be some closures later because of high winds.

In the Le Fornet area everything is open except signal and tunnel pistes.

On the Pissaillas glacier everything is open except the cascade piste.

Up in Solaise everything is open except the 3000 which remains closed. There is a possibility the L may close later.

In the beginners area, everything is open including the tobogganing area.

In the Bellevarde area everything is open but piste Santons may close later.

The walking trails and cross country trails are all open, but Col de l'Iseran may close later because of the wind.

The liason's with Tignes, the Borsat and Tommeuse chairlifts are both open.

If you're planning on heading off piste today to enjoy the powder, be sure to take the right equipment with you including a transiever, shovel and probe and, ideally, an experienced person or guide if you are not sure what you are doing.

Roads

The road is clear with no issues for vehicles. However, icy patches can still be found on the pavements.

News

We have sadly received the news that Janine Clarey passed away on Wednesday morning, at the Bourg-Saint-Maurice hospital, at the age of 88. At 18, Janine joined her sister Louise, who was running the Hôtel du Rond-point des Pistes at the time.
Until she was 70, Janine loved hiking and actively participating in various village activities such as the choir and swimming. She also enjoyed spending quality time with her friends. Janine is described by her husband Gaston Clarey, a former ski instructor, as well as by her children and grandchildren, as a wonderful wife, mother, and grandmother, full of kindness, always smiling, and beloved by all. Her funeral will be held on Friday, February the 7th at half past two in the afternoon at the Saint-Bernard de Menthon church, which is the church in the old part town, followed by burial in the family vault at the Val d'Isère cemetery.

For your information, yesterday, around 4 p.m., we experienced an outage on the main fiber optic line of the town hall’s network, preventing live streaming of our radio through the player on our website. But fear not! The issue was addressed promptly, and the connection was restored after about 30 minutes.

For the first week of February, the resort's occupancy rate is due to sit at about 85%, with about 91,100 overnight stays expected. Visitors will be predominantly arriving from Germany, Poland, and Czechoslovakia over the next week to enjoy Val d'Isère.
For the first weekend of February, local roads will be affected by heavy traffic. Travel in the departure direction, or down the mountain, will be challenging all day, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. However, coming up the hill, the traffic will only be heavy in the morning.
Tomorrow, traffic should be smooth in both directions.

On Tuesday and Wednesday, Val d'Isère Tourisme attended the 34th Destination Montagnes fair in Grenoble. French mountain resorts, ski schools, travel agencies, and tour operators came together to present their products and services. The goal of this fair is to promote mountain destinations and organize tours around the event.
Val d'Isère has already welcomed delegations from countries like Canada to showcase what the resort has to offer, hoping to encourage tour operators to promote it to their international clients, who make up 74% of Val d'Isère’s visitors. Val d'Isère Tourisme therefore serves as an intermediary between tour operators and partners to highlight the entire destination. Therefore this event is very worthwhile for the promotion of the town.

As usual, the first Sunday of the month means Dimanche Docu, presented by the Media Library. Tomorrow, Le Splendid cinema will screen the documentary “Once You Know” by Emmanuel Cappellin, who will be there himself to discuss the film. The documentary follows a young man who studied environmental science and confronts the harsh reality of climate change and resource depletion. He travels the world to meet experts like Pablo Servigne, Jean-Marc Jancovici, and Susanne Moser. The documentary will be in french but is so relevant to current affairs, if youre interested I would recommend going along to watch at half past eight this evening or tomorrow.

As you may know, it was Chinese new year on the 29th of January. To celebrate, today and tomorrow the butchers team at the Halles de Val supermarket will be dressed up and offering a variety of asian cuisine. Head over to the Halles de Val for a taste of something a little bit different.
