English Weather, News, and Events - February 17, 2025

p1255579

WEATHER

A warm sunny day, with maximum temperature of +4 at 2000 metres.
Cooler in the face of the North West wind which was
blowing at up to 50 km/hour on our peaks, but is fading off.
At 10.30 the temperature is

  • -8° in the Village.
  • -3° on Solaise.
  • -4° on Bellevarde.
  • -8° on Pisaillas but the wind chill factor takes it down to -14 so wrap up well for chilly chairlifts

ROADS

No problems are expected on our roads today
for safe and sensible drivers.

SKI REPORT

For the most up-to-date information please click here.
Here are the highlights of the ski report.

Only one lift closed, and most pistes both open and groomed.

Most pistes were groomed last night.
Only 1 lift and 2 pistes will be closed all day.

ON BELLEVARDE

The Brinzei touring track was groomed.
The G was the only slope not groomed.
If you like jumping around, go to the Snow Park
Which has a great selection of obstacles to suit your skillset.
Jumping on a busy piste is not cool, and is dangerous.
There will be training this morning on the Raye
and upper areas of the OK and Orange
but they will then open for you to enjoy.

ON SOLAISE

The 3000 lift and piste are closed as we are waiting for a lot more snow, falling on a wind free day.
The S, Cugnai and Marmottons were not groomed.

For tourers
the Ecureuil track is never groomed so more of a technical challenge
than the Brinzei in la Daille.

LE FORNET

Everything is open except the Tunnel.
The Foret, Petit Bois and Signal were not groomed.

ON PISAILLAS

Everything will open.
Only the Aiguille Pers was not groomed.

Everything is open on the nursery slope.
Including the tobogganing area.

The avalanche risk today is 2 out of 5.
Low risk but not no risk.
Particularly for ski tourers, on untracked slopes far from our pistes.
Don’t forget the two fatal avalanches in the Savoie on Saturday.
If tempted by skiing off piste, look very carefully at your friends.
Do they all have a beep, probe and shovel ?
Know how to use them ? Have practiced regularly and recently ?
Do any of them know the area well ?
How quickly could they find and dig you out ?
Any doubts ?
Stay on piste or book to ski with a mountain guide.

If you are going to Tignes, use the
Tommeuse or  Borsat chairlifts.

All our walking, multi activity and cross country tracks are open.
Please avoid walking on the grooves made for cross country skiers.

So everyone can feel safe on our slopes, Val has launched a campaign.
to remind everyone of the basic piste rules.
Parents of teenagers, just because they are fast, on our modern and flattering skis,
doesn’t mean they can ski well.
Think more - unexploded missile…..
We groan when parents proudly tell us their teen
Has "skied for 10 years"………….
The rare, lucky few have.
For most this means a maximum of 10 weeks, over 10 years
So less than half a season.
Not forgetting that it takes a few days each week, to get back to the level
you reached on the last trip.
That does not make A “ten year” Chelsea based teenager
an experienced or safe skier.
Back to piste etiquette…………
It is not fair to buzz past and frighten children and beginners
especially in the quiet zones. ("zone tranquille")
The skier arriving from above is always responsible for avoiding those below.
No exceptions. No excuses.
Injuring yourself is a shame.
Injuring anyone else is a crime.

PLEASE
Ski in control, at all times, at all speeds.

LOCAL NEWS

Big disappointment, for France, in Austria yesterday.
Val d’Isėre’s Olympic champion, Clément Noël was eliminated
on the final few metres of the World Cup Slalom, just as we could all see him as this years World Champion.
HOWEVER
Britians Pocket Rocket, 38 year old Mr Ryding came 6th !
Just ahead of the fastest French contestant, and Dave’e team mate
Billy Major who clocked the 4th fastest second run, putting him 15th
 2 places ahead of Val’s Victor Muffat-Jeandet.
Meanwhile, in the ladies Reece Bell zipped in 20th.
Making her the highest placed GB lady in a World Cup slalom since 1997.
Definitely one to watch.
Unusually, the French team left Saalbach without any medals.
GB Board Glory continues.
In Cortina, Charlotte Bankes won her 3rd consecutive
World Cup Snowboard cross gold.
While Zoe Atkin is joint Freeski halfpipe World  Cup champion,
after China's Li Fanghui won the exact same number of points.
Last, but not least, Jasmin Taylor leads the overall telemark rankings,
with a bronze in Norway, her 7th podium of this 24/25 season.
Well done to you all, and the teams behind you.

Every Monday our avalanche expert, Franck, leads a seminar
on snow and off piste safety at 18.00 in the Maison de Val.
Particularly topical, after Saturday’s fatal avalanche
when a brother and sister from Chambery died
even though their team all had the correct equipment.
We can never know enough about the changing conditions,
before straying from our marked pistes.
Just a note -This will be in French

Moving on -
The BAFTAS and  Oscars are in the news.
First, lots of mini steps before you lift a golden statue.
Luckily, registration has opened for our “Little Big Festival”
Where budding film makers can launch their careers,
dazzling the audience on 4th of April.
6 perfect minutes…shot in just 3 weeks, from the 3rd March.
Which is the day that the “mystery object” which has to appear in each film
will be revealed.
Last year it was a Bathing suit.

Finally, if you have something you need to share with us now
for example an accident on the road, or a birth or death.
