English Weather, News, and Events - February 19, 2025

18022025-p2322614

WEATHER

A spring like day - a few high clouds will loosely cover the sun.
There is a bit of a North West wind on the mountain,
though gusting below 30 km/hour.
It is quite warm, for winter.

At 9.50 the temperature is

  • -5 ° in the Village.
  • -1° on Solaise.
  • -3° on Bellevarde.
  • -5° on Pisaillas where the wind is less than 10 km/hour.

The maximum temperature at 2000 metres will be +7°.

 ROADS

No problems are expected on our roads today.

SKI REPORT

Another great day to be skiing in our Winter Wonderland.
Nearly everything is open and most pistes were groomed last night.
Only 1 lift and 2 pistes will be closed all day.

ON BELLEVARDE

Part of The G, the lower part of the Epaule du Charvet
and the middle part of the Orange, at the level of the bubbles,
were the only slopes not groomed

If you like jumping around, go to the Snow Park
and test your skills in the competitions for all levels
starting at 11.00.

There will be training this morning on the Raye
and upper areas of the OK and Orange
but they will then open for you to enjoy.

ON SOLAISE

The 3000 lift and piste are closed, while waiting for a big dump of snow on a wind free day.

The S, Cugnai and Marmottons were not groomed.

For tourers, the Ecureuil track is never groomed so more
of a technical challenge than the Brinzei in la Daille.

LE FORNET

Everything is open, except the Tunnel.
The Foret is never groomed.

ON PISAILLAS

Everything is open.

NURSERY SLOPE.

Everything is open including the tobogganing area.

The avalanche risk today is 2 out of 5.
Low risk but never ‘no risk’.
There are still slabs to be found, which may move
particularly if you are crossing untracked slopes
far from our pistes.
If tempted to ski off piste : look closely at your companions.
Do they all have a beep, probe and shovel ?
Know how to use them ? Practised recently ?
Any doubts - stay on piste, or book to ski with a mountain guide.

If you are going to Tignes
use the Tommeuse or  Borsat chairlifts.

A piece of piste etiquette.
PLEASE Ski in control, at all times, at all speeds.
IT IS not fair to buzz past and frighten children and beginners
especially on the green pistes and in the quiet zones.

The skier arriving from above is always
responsible for avoiding those below.
No exceptions, no excuses.

All of our walking, multi activity
And cross country tracks
are open.
Please avoid walking on the grooves made for cross country skiers.

Head pisteur Cedric describes today as ideal for walking
along the track, the  Col de l’Iseran, Europe’s highest mountain pass.

LOCAL NEWS

Crime Watch A la Val.
First business burglary of the year took place
sometime during Monday night, before 07.00 on Tuesday.
The town’s square “Crazy Barms” patisserie was attacked.
The safe, containing about 9000 euros was stolen.
CCTV has helped the gendarmes identify suspects
and their getaway vehicle.
Such crimes are rare here.
Several years ago rival bakers Chevallot was robbed
and the culprits caught on the only road in and out
of Val in the winter.

Never too late to celebrate “Candlemass”, eat crepes or mix up the generations.
The CCAS have arranged for our elders to visit the local school
where an afternoon crepe will be enjoyed by all.

Are you a  freestyle freak  ?

where young and old  explore the world together.
A show for all the family.

which helps make dreams come true for seriously ill children.

Yesterday evening the Savoie Orchestra (l'Orchestre des Pays de Savoie )
blasted Queen’s greatest hits
through our conference centre while 130  fans sang along.
The musicians also demonstrated the influence classical music had on
Queen by playing pieces such as Rossini's “Barber of Seville”.

Also yesterday evening, 3,622 (approximately) braved the cool evening to
enjoy the show by the French ski school (ESF).
More watched through the windows of their cosy chalets.
200 instructors were involved in the colourful torchlight descent
down the steep black run, The Face.
This included 6 freestyle and 8 synchronised skiers.
The evening ended in a big bright bang, with fireworks lighting up the sky.
The next ESF show ?
Same time, same place next Tuesday.

The Parisian family,
Jean-François and Sophie with their children Capucin and Aurélien Damour

left our medal ceremony with 2 bronze and 2 big golds.
Apart from their love of skiing, they celebrated 2 weddings, 2 homes
and a combined 153 years of coming to Val.
Though actually more than this official number as the ‘children’ first came as
toddlers, but their years don’t count towards medals until they are adults.
It all started, going rapidly downhill, when Jean-François came as a student…
Training and competing a la Mattis.
Before buying  their first property in 1978.
They became so close to local families that their son’s sponsor,
Fred Tissot, has been his ski instructor for more than 20 years,
And Aurélien considered Gerard Mattis as a second father.
Val thanks you for your loyalty.
I am sure we haven’t seen the last of you !
