WEATHER

Another cloudy, snowy day.
Sadly no sun, but snow down to 500 m this morning,
warming up at the end of the afternoon,
with the rain snow limit possibly rising to Village level.

Be prepared as the wind may blow from the North West at up 100 km/hour.
Wind here can be very patchy,  so calm in one area while blowing a hoolie in another.
At 10.00 it is gusting at 35 km/hour on Bellevarde, and twice that on Pisaillas.

At 9.50 the temperature is

  • -3° in the Village.
  • -7° on Bellevarde.
  • -9° on Pisaillas.

The maximum temperature at 2000 metres will be +3°

ROADS

No problems expected for cars and drivers fully equipped for the winter conditions.

SKI REPORT

For the most up-to-date information please click here

Over the last 24 hours, there has been at least
11 centimetres of fresh snow in town and up to 15 on the slopes.
Deeper where the wind has blown it, and less where wind blown it from.

Shortly before 7 am the pisteurs were out blasting avalanche prone slopes,
with satisfying and quick results.
So today's PIDA didn’t delay opening the lower lifts.

Most pistes were groomed overnight and some of the pistes,
most suitable for beginner, were groomed again this morning.

The Santons and The L will both present a BIG temptation,
but they are closed and the risk of avalanche into these gulleys is rising all day.
Please don’t test pisteur patience by skiing down a closed run.

The village chairlift is still under repair.
We believe it needs a special electrical part.
Maybe it has arrived this morning ?
In the meantime, you can use the Rogoney chairlift, or the draglifts.

The avalanche risk today is starting at 3 out of 5 which is a considerable
and will be increasing all day.
Think carefully before skiing off piste.
We have new snow, compact slabs, wind, on top of a fragile base,
and you won’t have visibility.
Do you really know where you are going and understand the current snow conditions?
Could any of your team find and dig you out quickly ?
Not so sure ? Stay on our marked pistes.

Walkers
Most paths are open but paths are not immune to avalanches
therefore Pont St Charles is closed and les Sources may follow.
If the paths are closed, go somewhere else….
Because of the wind, with the possibility the lift won’t be running when your walk is finished,
The Col de l’Iseran walking path is closed.

LOCAL NEWS

The ski patrol started securing the avalanche prone slopes (“PIDA”) again early this morning,
to prevent natural avalanches from affecting our pistes and village.
Skiers must never walk up, e.g. on touring skis with skins on,
until a PIDA is finished and the lifts have begun to open.

There is an unusual competition tomorrow….
27 journalists , from all over the world
Compete in The News Cup.
This is a challenge based on their location, so could be sporty or cultural
Val has chosen skiing.
Unlike a normal press trip, the invited journalists are not
spectators sitting back and reporting
but active participants.
After an evening on the snow with the French Ski School sharing tips and tricks,
the Slalom race will be at midday tomorrow.

Wednesday evenings is the time we set aside to show our appreciation
for those of you who have been returning regularly for many years.
Yesterday a brother and sister were each awarded a Big Gold medal, reserved for 50 or more years of Val holidays.
Patricia Terdjman fondly remembers when she was 20 and went through the tunnel in the mountain from Solaise for the first time,
followed by the steep black run towards le Fornet.
This run is not often open – you may remember we were very excited when it opened last December, after being shut for many years.
Her sibling, Vincent Worms, found himself sitting next to an estate agent on a long flight to the USA.
Before landing, he had bought an apartment in Val !
Unfortunately the details he was sold didn’t mention the avalanche wall just outside the window.
Luckily he noticed this just before the final signature, and found something with a prettier view.

When A British couple, Neville and Shirley Langrick, were faced
with the strict French Rules  around the Loyalty medal,

they summonsed their inner British Sense of Justice !
Instead of a local sponsor, they presented a carefully collaged dossier,
inculding photos and faded receipts
so their loyalty could not be questioned.
Although they started skiing in Scotland, weirdly their preference rapidly changed.
Their years meriting the sparkling silver medals was well spent.
Their daughter found a suitable husband here !
They do not limit their trips to winter.
They remember a beautiful summer day in 1991.
Morning skiing on the Pisaillas glacier.
Picnic in sunshine.
Then a huge snowstorm !
The organisers of the Tour de France will sympathise !
