English Weather, News, Ski Report - March 27, 2024

26032024-p2944485

WEATHER

Bit of a dull cloudy day, more Autumnal than Spring.
Though, it might brighten up just as you finish skiing this afternoon.
There are tiny snow flakes are being tossed around by wind in the village this morning
but 5 to 10 centimetres should land on our pistes.
Wind howled around the mountains during the night, but has dropped this morning.

If it wasn't for the wind, it wouldn't feel so chilly.
At 9.50 the temperature is

  • +2° in the Village.
  • -3° on Solaise.
  • -6° on Bellevarde.
  • -9° on Pisaillas.

ROAD

No problems are expected on the roads today.

SKI REPORT

Most pistes and lifts will open but the wind may affect our beautiful plans,
so when you are out keep an eye on the electronic notice boards.

At 10.00 all the lifts are already open except the
T bar on Pisaillas, which should open shortly, and the
broken Mont Blanc chairlift on Bellevarde.

The following pistes are closed :

  • Tunnel piste
  • Moutons as you can’t get to it as
  • Mont Blanc chairlift still broken.
  • There is training on the G and the Raye
  • Boarder Cross is closed due to poor visability.

The L and the Santons may close early due to the risk of a slab avalanche. Or two.
The patrollers think carefully about your safety before closing runs.
They don't close them just to annoy you !
Please respect their expert opinion and don't ski down a closed run.

The following were not groomed :

AT LE FORNET

  • Fôret
  • Signal
  • Petit Bois
  • Table d'Orientation
  • Col

ON SOLAISE

  • 3000
  • Arcelle
  • Fourche
  • Marmottons
  • S
  • Rhône- Alpes
  • Combe Martin
  • Cugnai

ON BELLEVARDE

  • Borsat
  • Epaule du charvet
  • Club des Sports

Tignes can be accessed via the Tommeuses and Borsat chairlifts.
If wind affects the lifts for your return, don’t panic, there are shuttle buses.

The avalanche risk today is again 2 out of 5.

IF you fancy skiing off piste,
Why not book to ski with, and learn from a mountain guide.

If you are a touring fiend, who goes out early to walk up before the pistes have opened,
The grooming teams work hard until about 10.00 so watch out for the grooming machines and particularly for their long huge cables which may suddenly come under tension..

All our cross county tracks and walking paths are are open except :

  • Les Branges
  • Laisinant
  • Le Col de l'Iseran
  • The longer track at the Ouillette.

LOCAL NEWS

Because of todays tricky weather the Ecomove Event has been moved
from the square in front of the Tourist Office to the Maison de Val
which is between the Swimming Pool and Sports Centre and the Conference Centre.
This enviromental awareness day is organised by the Vie Val d'Is, the association for the people who work in Val.
So change of venue, but same fighting spirit !
It includes a thrift store,  second hand skis, books, an area for repairing bikes,
and a skip for your obsolete telephones and computer equipment.
From 17.00 a zero-waste-soup will be prepared from unsold ingredients generously donated by local shops.
Last but not least, La Sauce Association will be running the refreshment bar,
which is also where you can sign up for tomorrows Signal Derby.

Yesterday evening was the last Avaline Trax uphill ski mountaineering race of the season.
More than 150 of our brave and super fit tackled the 500 vertical metres despite the wind and the cold.
The weather conditions didn’t even deter the many who competed in fancy dress !
Batman won the prize for the best costume,
whereas a special mention went to the bare-chested challenger,
seemingly unaware that it was -5 degrees.
The fastest man arrived in just under 25 minutes, and the speediest lady took only 5 minutes more.

Our ski patrollers are organising a Special Day at La Daille starting at 11.00 on Friday.
100 or so ski patrollers and drivers of the grooming machines from 8 resorts
are expected for this party which marks the beginning of the end of the winter.
The program of races includes :

  • a pairs giant slalom
  • patrollers racing with a bloodwagon
  • Precison grooming.

This year the event is open to the public, and many fun and free activities are planned including :

  • a waterslide
  • rifle shooting
  • a lumberjack competition
  • a close look at the snow grooming machines.
  • A refreshment stand with a bbq and tarte flambées, (tasty, very thin Alsacian version of a savoury pizza) completes the event.

The ski patrollers will finish the day with an evening in the Tontons bar in La Daille.

The funeral of Firmin Mattis, who died on the 20th of March, will take place at 10.00 today in our Church.
Anyone who knew him is invited to come and pay their respects.
