LOCAL NEWS

A few fun facts following the racing we all enjoyed last weekend…….
What we know as the
“Critérium de la Première Neige”
Started as a ‘winter warm up’ in 1955
with the aim to attract skiers and make Val d’Isėre
the top go-to ski destination.
In 1968, in nearby Grenoble, Jean Claude Killy
elevated both French alpine skiing and Val d’Isėre
to the fore by wining Olympic gold medals
In downhill, slalom and giant slalom !
Not surprising that for many years the combined ski area of
Tignes and Val d’Isere was known as “The Espace Killy”.
In 1973 the Critérium was made a World Cup event.
19 years later we hosted the speed skiing events for the
1992 Albertville Winter Olympics.
5 years later the ladies World Cup event was  finally included in our Critérium.

Our winter warm up has become a hugely popular event on TV.
Maybe you were one of the 70 million who tuned in last year.

Last weekend, despite tricky visibility the worlds zippiest
Giant Slalom and Slalom skiers zoomed down
what is one of the worlds most difficult courses.
Angled at an impressive 71 degrees, the Face de Bellevarde.

Not a great weekend for the French team
During a spectacular fall on Saturday,
Clément Noël, Val d’Isères Olympic Champion
broke 2 teeth and sprained his right ankle causing him to miss Sunday’s race.
Our own Club de Sports Victor Muffat-Jeandet came a respectable 16th in the slalom,
making him the highest placed French skier this weekend.

It was a better day to be British……….
In the slalom, Dave Ryding came 9th and Laurie Taylor 12th..
Well done Team GB !

Next winter will be its 70th Anniversary.
From mid December, over two weekends we will once again welcome
the worlds speediest skiers, both Gents and Ladies.
Many thanks to our teams of
ski patrollers,
piste groomers and
volunteers
who never fail to
Make Val Great.
Again and again !
