English Weather, News, Ski Report - February 29, 2024

WEATHER

To celebrate this extra February day we have
spring-like temperatures and grey skies.
The clouds will however be quite high.
May not last, but at 10.00 we could see some blue sky outside of our huge windows.

Good news is that it should start snowing again this afternoon,
down to 1700 metres, and continue overnight,
so we could wake to up to 20 centimetres
of fresh snow.

At 9.40 the temperature is
+4° in the Village.
-7° on Pisaillas

The maximum temperature will be +6° at 2000 metres.

ROADS

No problems are expected on our roads today.

There will be racing on

The Santons, the L and the Combe du Geant
are likely to close early due to a high risk of avalanche, especially on this warm day.

Don't irritate our ski patrollers by skiing down a closed run.

Tignes can be accessed via the
Tommeuses or Borsat chairlifts.

The avalanche risk today is again 3 out of 5.

If you are tempted to ski off piste,
ski only with people who have the right kit
AND know how to use it.......
Someone like a mountain guide !

All of our walking paths and cross county tracks are open apart from

  • les Branges
  • the Col de l’Iseran.

LOCAL NEWS

Happy Leap Year Day !
Especially to anyone whose Birthday it is today !

There is a public meeting at 10.00 this morning in the salle du Conseil Municipal to discuss the future development of the Iseran Pass.

Three masters students from Savoie Mont Blanc University have spent months
researching the area taking into account the various constraints of this high mountain pass
which is both so close to the Vanoise Parc and at the heart of a major route through the Alps.
They will be presenting proposals of how to improve the area in a way that is
sustainable, preserves & promotes the local heritage, the environment and remains attractive to tourists.
A previous study in 2019 didn’t impress people either on our side or in Bonneval.
Everyone is welcome at the meeting where the students will present their findings,
but if you can’t make it, maybe you would prefer to ski, we will put a summary on our website tomorrow.

Tuesday's Torchlight Descent that was cancelled due to the bad weather, will take place this evening at 19.00.
More than 100 instructors will ski down the Face de Bellevarde holding LED torches
making an illuminated snake which will be accompanied by a spectacular
Fireworks Display while the mountain will also be lit up by Dick's laser.

Colleagues of the snake-parts will warm the expected huge crowd of spectators with mulled wine or hot chocolate.
Please remember a 2 euro coin for the Ecocup – the proceeds will go ~
to the local charity ‘In Gabin’s eyes’.

The French Ski School (ESF) have also organised a cute,
and possibly even more popular, supporting act which will take place at
18.45
when children will ski down the Savonette piste clutching lanterns.

Meanwhile, Down at la Daille.
This season’s second Avaline Trax ski touring race will take place.
If you want to take part, hurry, as it is very popular and nearly all the places have already been booked.
To remind those tempted....it is a climb of almost 500 vertical metres from the nursery slope at the Daille to the top of the Bubble lift.
Skiers will then head to the Tontons Bar for both well deserved refreshment and the award ceremony.
Prizes have been donated by partners of the Sports Club including Dynastar and Millet.

The Savoyarde hosted another medal ceremony yesterday evening, for four loyal skiers.
A father and son each received a medal after clocking up a century of loyalty to Val d'isère.
Michel Daigne was awarded one of our new-this-season platinum medals
in recognition of his 60 years, while his son a gold after a very respectable 40 years.
Michel is well known both by members of the Bridge Club and for “Jazz a Val” which he presented for many years on RadioVal.
