English Weather, News, and Events - February 05, 2025

WEATHER

Sunny, warm, blue bird day.
With a temperature inversion, so cooler in village
than on our peaks

At 9.20 the temperature is

  • -6° in the Village.
  • +4° on Solaise.
  • -2° on Pisaillas.

The maximum temperature at 2000 metres will be +5°
A North Easterly wind may gust at up to 30 kilometres per hour.

ROADS

Remember last weekends Moutier landslide ?
We have potentially good news, at least a very strong rumour,
though we are awaiting confirmation.
The road should open Friday night, just in time for
Saturday’s busy change over day.
The first of the school holidays.

Also, just in case it is not fully open.
The French rail service (SNCF) are adding extra seats
to help bypass this area.
Might be worth considering ?

SKI REPORT

For the most up-to-date information please click here
Here are the highlights of the ski report.

Sun, snow, slopes beautifully groomed and nearly everything is open.
The few exceptions :
the 3000 draglift on Solaise, and the broken Signal draglift in le Fornet.
An accident resulted in a damaged pylon, but it has been replaced,
and the lift is almost ready for you !
Think they are testing it today.

The Santons is open but there is a large slab hanging  above it,
which may warm up and move in the sunshine.
It will close early if our experts are worried that
an avalanche could bury you.
Never ski on a closed piste.

ON BELLEVARDE

There is training on the Raye, but it will then open for everyone to enjoy.

ON SOLAISE

Only the 3000 is closed.
The Cugnai and Marais were not groomed last night.

LE FORNET

Everything is open except the Tunnel and Signal.

ON PISAILLAS

Everything is open.

The avalanche risk today is 3 out of 5.
This is a considerable risk.
There are still wind slabs, and the sun will warm and change the snow,
making it heavier, and more likely to ‘move’,
particularly on south facing slopes.
If you fancy skiing off piste, look carefully at your pals.
Equipment ? Knowledge ?
Do they all at least have, and know how to use,
beep, probe and shovel ?
Have they practiced recently ?
Your life could depend on it.
Any doubts ? Stay on piste or book to ski with a mountain guide.

If you are going to Tignes
use the Tommeuse or  Borsat chairlifts

There are tracks prepared for
cross country skiers in the Manchet Valley and Lac Ouillette.
Many tracks are shared so walkers, please avoid the tracks that are
only for cross country skiers, and never walk on the
specially made grooves.

A grooming machine will be busy preparing the track for tonight’s
cross country race between Val Village and the nursery slope.
Never go near one of these machines when it is moving.
The driver has restricted visibility, and the machines are very heavy.
Hitting you would hurt.

Val has lost two of its legends.

Tonio Marsala died at the weekend, at the age of 95.
Originally from Scilly, he moved to Portugal where he found and married his wife,
before they came to Val in 1966.
Here he worked hard in essential jobs
Including bricklaying (we have done a lot of building in Val since ’66 !)
grooming our pistes and driving the school bus.
He will be much missed by his wife, 4 children and 5 grandchildren.
The funeral will be held in our local church at 09.30 on Friday.
He will be buried in our cemetery.

On Monday, Francis Remise died at the age of 72,
In 1981 this beret wielding hippy,
and his friend Benoit (nicknamed « Neunoeil »)
moved here from the South West,
He started as a barman at the Signal restaurant,
spent time at the UCPA,
5 years working for the lift company
Before Les Tufs in La Daille
where we were treated to 15 years of this
Distinctive, cultured, quick witted, moustached
Full time Barman, part time Party animal.
Who “friends” tell me, made a mean Rum hot chocolate.
His funeral will be in Moutiers on Monday
before his ashes bring him back to Val.

Better news - a couple from Brussels received loyalty medals last night.
A silver in recognition of Chantal Guillaume’s 34 years,
while Claude Lomobaerts’ extra 7 years earned him a gold.
Chantal enjoyed ski touring, and downhill competitions,
while Claude fondly remembers skiing with the French actor
Richard Anconina after meeting him by chance in one of our restaurants.

The Vie Val d’Is has its AGM this evening.
Time for members and associates to share ideas,
plan events, elect committee members
And look back on 2024.
It will be more fun than “A G  M” normally brings to mind –
a quiz and drinks.
If you can make it, please let them know.

There will be Cross country pairs relay race at 18.30.
A fun track will be set up on the Place des Dolomites.
Anyone can enter, holiday makers or locals
professionals or amateurs, experienced or beginners.
If you would love to join but sadly don’t have the kit - no excuse !
Trackside shops  Borasso or Intersport, will lend you all you need.

After a lot of work, and bit of a delay,
the new Bus Station reception building in
La Daille is finally open !

If you have an ARVA transceiver
Read carefully – there is a ‘voluntary’ recall.
There may be issues with battery consumption.
More information click here.
and here.

Finally GB glory.
Our Park & Pipe athletes had fun in The World Cup in Aspen.
Zoe Atkin took gold in the Freeski Halfpipe,
While Kirsty Muir showed her knee has recovered,
coming 8th in her first competition for a year.
Meanwhile Scott Meenagh came 4th in the Val di Fiemme
Para Biathlon World cup sprint.
Finally, freestyle skier Lloyd Wallace, who represented us at
2 winter Olympics, and is the only brit, so far,
to win a men’s aerials Europa cup contest, has decided to bow out.
Enjoy your retirement - sure you won’t be sitting still !
