SKI REPORT

For the most up-to-date information please click here.
Here are the highlights of the ski report.

Pistes are in great condition and only 1 lift and 2 pistes will be closed all day.

ON BELLEVARDE
The bottom of the Epaule du Charvet was the only run not groomed.
The upper parts of the OK and Orange, and the Raye
will be closed this morning for training
before opening for everyone.
Our local children are on holiday this week, and they do like speed on the steep,
so the Club des Sports will probably be zipping down the Joseray.

If you like jumping, the Snow Park has a range of obstacles
to suit all skill levels.
Jumping onto a regular piste is not cool, and dangerous.
There is a freestyle competition there at 13.30, register at 12.30.
Match a prize to your talent.

ON SOLAISE
The 3000 lift and piste are closed.
The S, Rhone Alps and Marmottons were not groomed.
For tourers -the Ecureuil track is never groomed.

LE FORNET
Everything is open except the Tunnel.
The Foret is never groomed.

ON PISAILLAS
Everything is open and groomed.

NURSERY SLOPE
Everything is open and groomed, including the tobogganing area.

The avalanche risk today is 1 out of 5.
Low risk but not no risk.
If tempted to ski off piste, look closely at your group.
When did they last practice with their beep, probe and shovel ?
Would they be any use in an emergency?
Two recent incidents to think about before heading off piste.
Someone followed lovely tracks leading to  a nice couloir, or so they thought.
Over a cliff they went……head injury, broken arm, plenty of random bruises
but it could have been much worse.
Remember the person who made the tempting tracks might have had a parachute, or now be in hospital.

The pisteurs had to put themselves in danger rescuing people
who tried the Gorge du Malpasset before discovering, like it’s name, it couldn’t be passed.
They spent an hour or so with their feet in the water.
Their call for help came late in the day.
Today’s plea from head pisteur Cedric Bonnevie  -
don’t try the Gorge du Malpasset even if it was brilliant last time you were here.
Or your mate says it will be great.
At the moment it is dangerous.

If you are going to Tignes, where the skiing is almost as good as Val,
use the Tommeuse or  Borsat chairlifts.

All of our walking, multi activity and cross country tracks are open.

Remember “Speed” is not a ski swear word, but
please control your speed at all times.
Leave The Monde du Gypaete and other quiet zones for beginners.
If you want to zooooooom today, go the border cross.
However, on Friday there will once again be a Super G on the Borsat
between 09.30 -14.00
No charge.
For anyone to enjoy at any speed.
There is also a competition to name this “event”
which we hope will become a regular Friday feature.

LOCAL NEWS

Crime in Val….Happily unusual, hence the mention.
A Parisian couple combined their ski holiday with a shoplifting spree.
Several shops in Val Village, lots of lovely clothes.
The shop owners played Clouseau, using both CCTV with their observations,
and caught them.
Apparently the first time this couple had been formally introduced to
 the gendarmes.
They were fined 300 euros, and also had to pay for the clothes.
Probably a lot more than 300 euros.
Not finished sleuthing :
There was a series of burglaries last week in the area known as Petit Alaska.
2 apartments in the same building and a hotel were targeted.
It wasn’t obvious how they got in, but at least
2 computers and 1500 euros were taken.
No suspects ……. Yet….
Samples have been taken ….The gendarmes are on the case.

Every year 700,000 vehicles and 20,000 cyclists come through Val.
3 students from the Savoie Mont Blanc University spent 4.5 months
Studying low or no carbon transport options.
They spoke to Val’s decision makers, analysed questionnaires
and reviewed what is being done in other places,
before summarising their findings with suggestions for
short, medium and long-term changes
including a low traffic zone,
improved both street markings and sign posts
smoother bus connections.
Questions following their presentation yesterday included
how to tackle transport for the areas
on the Plaine de la Daille and between the centre of Val and le Fornet.
At the moment all just suggestions and questions.
No definite changes but the students were thanked for their
input and interesting ideas.

Last night nearly 4,500 braved the chill in the air to
enjoy the Show by the French ski school (ESF).
More watched through the windows of their cosy chalets.
300 instructors, 77 children from the Club des Sports,
6 freestyle AND 9 synchronised skiers
Were involved in the colourful torchlight descent
down the steep black run, The Face.
The evening ended in a big bright bang, with fireworks lighting up the sky.

Did it inspire your inner freestyler?

Tonight …..a PUPPET SHOW ! “Le Chevelier Estragon” (The Knight Tarragon)
By the Patamouss Theatre troupe.
Lord Theodor, his wife and daughter Amelisse lived in the Trouillerie castle
A scary rumour rocked them…..
A monster, a beast with a long nose, red eyes, big wings and hairy feet was hidden in the forest,
ready to eat anyone who came near…..
NOBODY was allowed out……..
But Ms Amelisee…….loved to walk in the forest, pick flowers….
So her father The Lord organised a tournament to find the
Knight who will escort Ms Amelisse, and protect her from the beast…….
No spoilers here………

2 more visitors were rewarded with their loyalty yesterday evening.
A Belgium lady now has a bronze medal after holidaying here with her family
for more than 20 years.
Isabelle Houyet’s sponsor Guy Bonnevie introduced her to our
off piste powder paradise.
Although she clearly loves the winter, she is hoping, one day,
to make a summer visit to our Alpine meadows.
Another lady, Françoise Prevosteau, is proudly wearing a platinum medal.
Sixty five years !
Francoise’s father came here for the first time in 1939.
Fernand Bonnevie, of « Les Bronzés font du ski » film fame
taught her to master his famous pole plant.
On a more sombre note, she was here in 1970
when the  huge fatal avalanche stopped
just next to the building she was staying in.
Patrick Chevallot was pleased to pin the medal on her chest.
No doubt she has tried a few of his pastries over the last half century or more.
