SKI REPORT

For the most up-to-date information please click here.
Here are the highlights of the ski report.

Plenty of pistes to pick.
Nearly all our pistes are both open and groomed.
Only the 3000 drag lift will be closed all day.

ON BELLEVARDE

Everything groomed except for the G.
The Raye is closed for training this morning.
The Santons may close due to the risk of an avalanche filling this gulley.

PLEASE !
Our pistes are only closed when there is a very good reason.
Simple advice – never ski on a closed piste.

ON SOLAISE
The 3000 lift and piste are closed.
The L, another gully, may well close for the same scary
“Avalanche-Burying-you” reason as the Santons.
Marmottons, S, Cugnai and Ecureuil touring track were not groomed.

LE FORNET
Everything is open except the Tunnel.
The Foret, Petit Bois and Signal were not groomed.

ON PISAILLAS
Everything is open.
The Aiguille Pers and Combe du Geant were not groomed.

On the Nursery Slope.
Everything is open and groomed, including the tobogganing area.

The avalanche risk today is 3 out of 5.
This is a considerable risk.
Sadly, sun makes it all pretty and tempting, rather than safe.
Especially far from the pistes.
Over the last week we have had new snow and wind,
which will all have warmed up by late morning,
so heavy snow ready to take you for a ride.

If you are heading off piste – think carefully.
Do you really know where you are going?
Do all your team have beep, probe and shovel ?
Know how to use them?
Have practised recently ?
Any doubts, ski with a mountain guide.

If you are going to Tignes, use either the Tommeuse or  Borsat chairlifts.

All of our walking, multi activity and cross country tracks are open.

Todays top pisteur tips :

  • Insurance that covers skiing.
  • Leave quiet zones, and the Monde du Gypaete, for beginners.
  • Control your speed at all times, but,
especially when approaching junctions and the nursery slope.

We start with very sad news.
Jean Charles Boraso, a well-loved local personality, and owner of Boraso Sport,
died suddenly on Friday night at the age of 60.
There will be a ceremony on Thursday at 15.30 in our church.

Tonight at 18.30 there is a public meeting in the Maison Marcel Charvain
giving  representatives from our Town Hall the opportunity to
share and discuss their plans for renovating Val Village.

World Cup Race news from our local Heros.
In yesterday’s World Cup slalom in Norway, Olympic Champion
Clément Noël was disappointed to finish 7th.
He was 4th after the first run, but in the end finished just over 1 second
Slower than the winner.
1.06 seconds between 1st and 7th shows how close these racers are.
He is still 3rd in the overall rankings, and remains in the running
for the Crystal Globe which has so far eluded him.

Val’s Victor Muffat-Jeandet finished 12th
and will be joining Clément in the finals in Sun Valley in the US of A.

Britian’s Billy Major smashed his personal best by coming 9th and
Dave Ryding
came 17th in the same race -
just 1.91 seconds slower than the Swiss skier Loic Meillard who took gold.

After finishing 5th overall at the weekend in Beaufort’s Pierra Menta,
Val’s Diego Bonnevie and his partner Antonin Kaire
became French Under Eighteen Ski Mountaineering Team Champions.
Not bad !
Especially considering Diego didn’t originally plan to take part in this competition !

Moving on from the local French –more GB Glory.
20-year-old Scottish snowboarder Kirsty Muir won the
Slopestyle World Cup in Tignes.
Particularly impressive as, after a serious knee injury.
she only went back to competing in February.

And 18-year-old Mia Brookes’ 500 World Cup points
has secured her the World Cup Snowboard Park and Pipe title.

Saturdays Super Loto was a great success.
More than 300 people enjoyed the evening,
though many had to mask their disappointment
at missing out on prizes including a digital tablet and a trip to Venice.

Finally, every Monday our avalanche expert, Franck Paragot,
leads a seminar, in French, on snow and off piste safety
at 18.00 in the Maison de Val.
Sadly, there have already been fatal avalanches in Val this winter.
We can never know enough about the changing conditions.
Preparation is everything.
Knowledge and equipment, choice of companions all help to minimise the risks.
But off piste is never “Risk free”.
Franck is a trainer with ANENA, which is the association which studies
Snow and avalanches, so really he knows his stuff.

Agenda

Monday is Market Day in Val.
They started at 08.00 and are open until late,
so come and peruse the many stalls in the Centre of the Village.
These include
local cheeses and dried meat
clothes
ski kit
arts and crafts.
What about a prezzie for those back home ?

17.45 - 19.45
Why not try joining a Snow-Snake-Sledge
Made of from 2-10 people on the floodlit Savonnette nursery slope.
Family fun and Free.

18.00
There is a FREE talk on Snow and Off piste Safety In the Maison de Val
Which should be really interesting, we can never know enough,
particularly after the recent fatal avalanche.
We don't know what we don't know, and what we do know always benefits from revision.
To avoid disappointment…..for those that don’t follow spoken French.
It won’t be translated into English.

18.30
There is a public meeting in the Maison Marcel Charvain. (opposite the Church)
When representatives from the Town Hall will share information
About the renovation of Val Village.
