WEATHER

After a sunny week, today we have different winter weather.
Cloudy, a fierce southerly wind of up to 70 km/hour this morning.
And stronger this afternoon.
Sand is being blown from the Sahara,
turning our snow from white to yellowy orange.
(this is not a joke !)
In keeping with today’s Desert weather theme,
It is warm with a maximum temp of +9  at 2000 metres.

At 9.50 the temperature is

  • +9° in the Village.
  • +4° on Solaise.
  • +3° on Bellevarde.
  • -2° on Pisaillas where the wind has been gusting around 40 km/hour.

ROADS

No problems are expected on our roads today,
but if you are travelling this weekend it is worth checking that you car is
fully and legally equipped for winter driving in the Savoie.

SKI REPORT

For the most up-to-date information please click here.
Here are the highlights of the ski report.

Nearly everything is both open and groomed.
BUT wind….May affect lifts, particularly on the Pisaillas.
So while you are skiing around keep an eye on the piste notice boards.

ON BELLEVARDE
There is a memorial race on The Raye from 13.30.
Everything was groomed except for the
Last steep wall of Epaule du Charvet and The G.
The Santons will almost certainly close early
due to the risk of an avalanche engulfing this piste.
There are big slabs hanging above it waiting to slide…….
Don’t be on a closed piste when this happens.
The experts who decided to shut the slope will be the same people
risking their lives finding and digging you out.

ON SOLAISE
The 3000 lift and piste are closed.
The Marmottons, S, Cugnai and Ecureuil touring track were not groomed.
The L is also a gully and may close early for the same
Avalanche-risk-reasons as the Santons.

LE FORNET
Everything is open except the Tunnel.
The Foret, S and Petit Bois were not groomed.

ON PISAILLAS
Everything is open and groomed
But hopes of skiing there may be thwarted by the wind.

On the NURSERY SLOPE
Everything is open and groomed, including the tobogganing area.

The avalanche risk today is 2 out of 5.
There was barely a freeze last night, and
even though we can’t see the sun, it is warm today.
There are plenty of slabs out there especially on North facing slopes.
A few moved in the last few days, exposing the ground below.
The snow will be heavy and warm.
Don’t end up underneath it.

If you are heading off piste – do you really  know
What you are doing and where you are going?
Do all your team have a beep, probe and shovel
And could they find and dig you out quickly ?
Listen to your gut – any doubts - ski with a mountain guide.
They have diplomas to prove they know what they are doing.

If you are going to Tignes, use either the Tommeuse or Borsat chairlifts.

All of our walking, multi activity and cross country tracks are open
but might be best to avoid the Col de l’Iseran in case the lifts home close.

Just because it is the last day of your holiday,
don’t be tempted to do anything stupid !
Honestly assess your ski skill set.
The Face will still be here when you come back,
and can ski in control.

LOCAL NEWS

An emotional afternoon yesterday.
400 friends and family shared their memories and love for Jean-Charles Boraso
at his funeral in our Church.
His personality and popularity were such that many had travelled from afar.
Tonight Jean-Charles will be honoured in a different, but Very Val way.
At a 19.15 friends, family and instructors from the ESF will clasp torches
before following Jean-Pierre Bazille down the Face de Bellevarde.
If you knew Jean-Charles, and would like to take part, please contact the organisers.
No doubt all involved, skiers and spectators, will share
happy memories over a glass, or 2, of local wine.

A bit of a thoughtful Friday, as this afternoon at 13.30 on the Raye piste
is the annual Minou Memorial organised by our Lift company For the 30th time.
70 of the best skiers from lift companies across our region
race while remembering lost colleagues.
Prizes will be presented in the Tonton’s bar in la Daille,
followed by a very sociable evening filled with stories, drinks and nibbles.

From 10.30 this morning, our emergency services are
preparing and practising how they work as a team when an avalanche arrives.

More than 20 pisteurs will be joined by avalanche trained dogs, and their handlers,
a team from the PGHM (the mountain gendarmes)
and of course our helicopter will be whirling around.
The location is a secret, so don’t panic if you see a lot of frenetic activity this morning.
However, as always, if you do see an avalanche starting,
which could of course happen at the same time as this exercise,
call the pisteurs.
The number is on the back of your ski pass.

Last night was the second part of the “Chėre Toi” musical postcard workshop.
Tonight the grand finale of this years Poets springtime festival
is a concert by Fish le Rouge and Monkeywink,
in our cinema at 19.00.
As with all the poetic events this week, no charge to attend.

Anyone busy filming, or just preparing the perfect plot…..
You only have 3 more days to finalise your masterpiece
and submit it to the Little Big Jury.
The Val Version of the Oscars, when the films will be shown
and prizes awarded, is on Friday 4th April.

FINALLY
The delayed Savoie Silver Cup Slalom Championships
Took place at Aillons Margereaux 1400, near Chambery, on Wednesday.
Val’s own British blooded Olivia Angus came 3rd in the 2014 race.
Huge achievement !
Well done Olivia – you have had a great season.

A bigger Brit, also having a good winter,
Jaz Taylor took Bronze in the
Spring 2025 Telemark World Championship in Les Contamines.
