English Weather, News, Ski Report - December 30, 2023

30122023-p1900508

Weather

There were a few clouds overnight, but we are in for a sunny day with mostly clear blue skies.
However there are some wise people telling us that there may be clouds later so keep this in mind when choosing either sunglasses or goggles and to be safe take both.

There will be a light breeze for most of the day with occasional gusts of up to 28 km/h.
The wind came from the Northwest during the night.
This morning it will blow from the East, and this afternoon from the South East.

The temperature will rise to two degrees.
AT 9.30 the temperature is
-3 in the centre of the Village.
-3 on the top of Belvarde.
-2 on Solaise.
-8 on Pisaillas.
The maximum temperature will be -6 at 2000 metres.

Roads

Today is expected to be the busiest day of the season on the roads of the Tarentaise, with more than 32,000 vehicles heading up the hill and 29,000 returning home .
Inevitably this heavy trafic will be moving slowly and at times may stop completely, particularly on the dual carriageway between Moutiers and Albertville .
For the guests that are leaving our ski resorts, the busiest and therefore slowest times will be between 09 .00 and 14.00 and around 18 00 .

If you are lucky enough to have the flexibility to choose your departure time, why not avoid the worst of the traffic by leaving early in the afternoon after enjoying a final morning on our slopes ?
What we call a « Win Win »

If you are arriving today and travelling between 09.00 and 20.00.........your journey will take longer than usual , particularly this afternoon.
Preparation is everything.
Have drinks and tasty snacks in the car with you.
Tune into RadioVal.
Relax and drive carefully.
Look forward to gliding on your skis tomorrow !

Ski Report

We can all enjoy a fab ski in the sunshine today as almost all of our vast playground is open !

On the Pisaillas
Everything is open.

At Le Fornet
only the Foret and Tunnel pistes are closed.

On Solaise
The only definite closure is The Piste L.
The 3000 drag lift and piste opened for the first time yesterday.
Remember both the 3000  piste AND the drag lift are extremely challenging.
The Marmottons and the Signal are both open, but they are difficult runs that have not been groomed.

On Bellevarde
The Santons and Epaule du Charvet will remain closed as there is not quite enough snow .

Pistes closed for Training on Belvarde
This morning on the higher part of the OK, but this will open for you this afternoon.
The Raye will be closed all day except for those involved in the racing:

Tignes can be accessed via the Tommeuses or Borsat chairlifts.

The avalanche risk today is 2 out of 5.

Please
Do not ski down a closed run.
Leave the quiet zones for the beginners to enjoy.
Look ahead, anticipate and control your speed, particularly when approaching junctions.

If considering skiing off piste.
Ski only with people who have and know how to use the appropriate safety equipment .

If in doubt - hire an instructor or a mountain guide
OR stay on our groomed and well signed posted pistes.
If you have an accident, please remember that the most efficient way to get help is to phone the number for the ski patrol which is printed on your ski pass.

Cross Country skiers can enjoy skiing on the tracks in
the Manchet Valley, La Daille or Lac d'Ouillette.

All of our beautiful and varied walking paths are open.

Local News

Who doesn’t LOVE statistics ?

We certainly do !
Therefore we are going to continue what we started last season and begin the local news on a Saturday with the expected occupancy rates for the coming week.
In the week between Xmas and New Year 2022 the occupancy rate was 83.5% or 100,000 overnight stays.

There will be a lot more people enjoying their holidays in Val d’Isère this week, as 88.1% of beds are booked, the equivalent of 111,580 overnight stays.

Downhill Racing at Bormio

Marco Odermatt, who was second in the downhill on Thursday, won the Super G yesterday.
Cyprien Sarrazin was the favourite but yesterday was not his day.

There was a spectacular crash after which Christof Innerhofer was airlifted to hospital. Despite his face being clearly blood stained the main problem turned out to be an injury to his knee.
Marco Schwarz also injured his knee when he crashed on Thursday during the downhill, and underwent surgery yesterday morning.
We wish Marco and Christof a speedy and full recovery.
