English Weather, News, Ski Report - March 30, 2024

WEATHER

Windy walk to work this morning.
At 10.00 it is intermittenly gently snowing in the village, albeit in a slightly horizontal way....
The snow-rain-limit will flick  between 1700 metres, so just below the village,
and 2000 metres, which would be brolly-appropriate-village-weather.
However, not all bad as we should get a decent amount of snow,
a good 20-30 centimetres and 50 cm on the border with Italy.

Don't be surprised if the clouds look a bit yellow,
as they may have sand in them.

It doesn't feel it when the wind is blowing through you,
but it is warm for this time of the year.

At 10.00 the temperature is

  • +4° in the Village.
  • 0° on Solaise.
  • -3° on Bellevarde
  • -6° on Pisaillas

Wrap up well  it is windy everywhere, Solaise, Bellevarde and Pisaillas with gusts of 90 km/hour,.
Or more.

ROADS

No problems are expected in the village,
but it is a change-over day and snow is expected down to 1700 metres,
so drive carefully if leaving Val.

SKI REPORT

The wind is going to seriously mess with our day on the slopes.
Some lifts may not open, or will close suddenly,
So when you are out
keep an eye on the electronic notice boards.

At 10.00 all the lifts on the nursery slope were open
and you can ski on Bellevarde as the following lifts are already running :

  • Olympique
  • Funival
  • Bubbles at La Daille
  • Marmottes chair lift

Drag lifts :

  • Lanches
  • Slalom
  • Snowpark

The bubble on Solaise has opened, and the magic carpets but nothing higher.
Though this does allow you to ski down
the Plan, L or Mattis.

Nothing has opened yet on Le Fornet (the cable car ran for a few brief minutes before closing) or Pisaillas glacier.

The following pistes will be closed, wind or not.

  • Tunnel piste
  • Moutons as the Mont Blanc Chairlift is still not working
  • Boarder Cross and
  • Snow Park depending on visibility

The following were not groomed  :

ON BELLEVARDE

  • Epaule du charvet

AT LE FORNET

  • Fôret
  • Signal
  • Petit Bois
  • Table d'Orientation

ON SOLAISE

  • 3000
  • Marmottons
  • S
  • Combe martin
  • St Jacques

Tignes is also windy, so you probably can't get there unless the wind drops
and the Tommeuse and/or Borsat chairlifts are able to function safely.
Though if you really need to get there, there are shuttle buses.
Or you could drive...

The avalanche risk today is 3 out of 5.
The snow is compact but even a small avalanche
could be big  enough to drag you over rocks and  bury you in a hole.
Make sure that your off piste companions all have the skills to find you and quickly dig you out…….
Any doubts  - book to ski with, and learn from, a mountain guide.

All our cross county tracks and walking paths are open and recently groomed except :

  • Les Branges
  • Laisinant
  • Le Col de l'Iseran
  • Lac Ouillette

The French handicap cross country ski Championship
is happening in le Manchet valley -
go and cheer them on !

LOCAL NEWS

Easter change-over day !
30, 000 vehicles approaching and 22,000 leaving.
The road will be slow
uphill  11.00 - 19.00.
downhill 10.00 - 13.00.

Slightly more people here this week, than last, with 75.5% occupancy.
Quite a lot busier than  the first week last April,
but that is probably because this is the Easter weekend
and British school holidays.

Last night's The Little Big Festival was a triumph !
We did warn you yesterday that it would be 'off beat'
and it certainly didn't disappoint.
There were more than 300 in the audience, and many more tuned in online.
Many apologies for some technical difficulties
which meant that those at home couldn't always hear the interviews,
but these teething troubles have been sorted so all will be perfect for streaming the
« Adventure and Discovery Film Festival » from 15-18th April.
Back to last nights show - Nine diverse and very zany films were shown,
all made by local talented amateurs
who clearly had a lot of fun in the process.
The MC, RadioVal's own Valentin, and the jury,
definitely chose their co-ordinating costumes carefully !
This was the 4th time the Festival has run,
and we are already looking forward to the 5th !

Continuing with the saga of whether Val d'Isère will be included in the
Bid by the French Alps to host the 2030 Olympic Games.
15 of Vals great and good attended the meeting in Lyon on Thursday.
A smiley mayor appeared in Radio Val the next day, raising our hopes.
However, we are still at the  'No news is Good news.....' stage...........
So frustrating !
The project manager, Laurent Wauqiez, a former director of our Sports Club did say positive things,
but the final decision now lies with Michel Vion de Trancher, the technical director of the International Ski Federation.
So we may not know until July.......July 2024 (we hope....)

Today's Events

If you ski today, despite the miserable weather,
you will probably be pretty tired afterwards.
You may want to just relax in your chalet,
but if you are self-catering and don’t fancy cooking,
we have plenty of restaurants to choose from.
Or order a take away…..

Maybe you have given your skis a well-earned day off,
why not head to our Swimming Pool and Sports Centre.
Which is open until 21.00.
Remember you get two free entries ~
to the swimming pool on your week's pass - use them !

Alternatively , try another winter sport
and test your balance,
by gliding elegantly around our ice-skating rink
which is open until 20.00.

Free Public Transport

The red shuttle bus (‘le train rouge’) runs between La Daille and Le Fornet, via the roundabout adjacent to the nursery slopes (‘Rond-point des pistes’) every 6 minutes from 07.00 to 20.00 and then every 20 minutes until 02.00.
The blue shuttle bus (‘le train bleu’) travels between the Rond-point des pistes and Legettaz every 15 minutes from 08.30 to 23.20.
The yellow shuttle bus (‘le train jaune’) takes you to the Manchet valley via the main street and the rue de la Balme every 20 minutes from 08.30 to 23.20.
